How to Prepare for a Job Interview

 


Interviewers evaluate many things, including your poise, attitude, basic social skills, and communication abilities. Often, these qualities can outweigh your actual experience and education. Therefore, it's important to prepare for your job interview by identifying your selling points.


The first step in this process is to analyze the job description and determine how your past experiences relate to the position. This will give you a better idea of the types of questions you may be asked. For example, if you are asked about your greatest strength, consider describing an accomplishment that demonstrates a skill that is critical to the job (such as teamwork or working under pressure).


Another common question is, "How would you deal with a difficult situation?" It's a great idea to have several examples of this type of problem ready to discuss, such as a time when you took a risk or had a conflict with a coworker. You can practice telling these stories before the interview by using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method.


It's a good idea to arrive 10-15 minutes early to the interview. This will give you time to check in with the receptionist and use the restroom before the interview begins. Greet your interviewer(s) with a firm handshake and a smile, and remember to maintain eye contact throughout the entire session.
